Washington got the fields, not just the barrels. President Trump says the US has secured majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's proven reserves through private partners, about a fifth of the world's largest reserve base. Caracas confirms a 25-year agreement covering 17 fields, with company signings starting this week.
Refining is the real prize. Gulf Coast refiners are the largest heavy-crude buyers in the world. Venezuelan Merey has been offered at a 6 to 7.50 dollar discount to Brent. Discounted feedstock plus idle coker capacity equals margin.
Geography beats geopolitics. The Strait of Hormuz has opened and closed since the Iran war began in February. Gulf flows run at about two thirds of pre-war levels. A tanker from Venezuela reaches Texas in days, and no chokepoint sits in between.
The petrodollar is the hidden stake. Iran now tolls Hormuz passage in yuan, and by some estimates a fifth of world oil trade has slipped off dollar rails. Pulling Venezuela's barrels back into dollar-cleared Gulf trade defends the currency itself.
The inflation lever. Gasoline is up 24.6 percent year over year and headline CPI runs near 3.4 percent. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh just put a September hike on the table. Secure heavy supply next door, settled in dollars, is one of the few tools that pushes pump prices down without one.
